A selection of the methodological and substantive/theoretical projects I lead or collaborate on.
Methodological projects
Developing and stress-testing the quantitative tools behind the substantive work
How reliable is the Reliable Change Index?
A Monte Carlo simulation line, in collaboration with Eben Afrifa-Yamoah (Edith Cowan University), evaluating the performance of the Reliable Change Index (RCI) across conditions of reliability and effect size — asking when it over- or under-detects meaningful individual change, and when it fails outright.
Parameter recovery in non-normal mixture models
A Monte Carlo simulation study comparing the SKEWT, SKEWNORMAL and TDIST options in Mplus under varying degrees of distributional non-normality, to identify which specification most reliably recovers true mixture model parameters and class assignments in skewed psychological data.
Substantive & theoretical projects
Understanding resilience, loneliness, isolation and reconnection
RESLON Lab — Research on Daily Dynamics of Loneliness, Isolation, and Reconnection
My flagship substantive/theoretical research line. Earlier work mapped the nomological network of loneliness and its prospective links with metacognitive beliefs, worry and mental health. The current programme uses a 30-day daily-diary dataset and dynamic structural equation modelling to test whether “feeling lonely” and “feeling isolated” are empirically dissociable states with distinct daily dynamics, consequences and behavioural correlates — social withdrawal, reconnection, and digital versus in-person contact. Looking ahead, the lab plans to extend into genetic studies and intranasal oxytocin trials.
Thrive: Thriving Through Reflection on Digital Engagement for Learning and Well-Being
A newly funded EU Horizon consortium project (HORIZON-CL2-2025-01) investigating how reflective practices around digital engagement can support learning and wellbeing among young people. As co-applicant and member of Work Package Four, I contribute quantitative methods expertise to the evaluation design and analysis plan for this four-year, multi-country programme.
Longitudinal analyses of mental health, vulnerability and protective factors among Norwegian Afghanistan veterans
Combining data from the HUNT survey and the Armed Forces’ health registry to investigate relationships between deployment-related risk factors and health, and profiles of resilience among the general population and Norwegian Afghanistan veterans — including how resilience and constellations of robustness factors might differ between civilian and veteran samples.
The Ghana Machiavellianism Project
As principal investigator, a collaboration with researchers from the University of Ghana and the University of Education, Winneba, examining how Machiavellian views and tactics, interpersonal trust and corruption perception relate to mental health and wellbeing in Ghana. Findings link corruption perception, interpersonal trust and mental health problems, with further papers on sense of community and sociopolitical consequences in preparation.
Housing First, connection second
A collaboration with researchers from the University of Cambridge and the University of Toronto analysing data from a Housing First controlled trial in Canada, examining how professional helping relationships shape trajectories of housing stability for people facing severe and multiple disadvantages.
UPRIGHT: Universal Prevention Resilience Intervention Globally implemented in schools
A resilience-based universal whole-school programme (EU Horizon 2020) co-created and adapted across five European regions to promote mental wellbeing in teenagers. As a member of Work Package Two, I led the psychometric and factor-analytic validation of the Resilience Scale for Adolescents and contributed to the trial methodology across Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Spain and Norway.
